This guide is for people who already:

  • Read “EverQuest Sanctuary: The Secret Custom EQ Server You Won’t Want to Log Out Of”
  • Followed the New Player & Setup Guide and can log into Sanctuary normally

Now you just want MacroQuest 2 running with my preconfigured setup, without digging through configs or plugin lists.

On Sanctuary, the rule is simple:

MacroQuest is allowed, but you must be at your computer when it’s doing anything.
No AFK grinding, no leaving characters unattended on automation.

This post only covers basic installation and launch order.
No commands, no settings deep dive – just how to get MQ2 running alongside your Sanctuary client.

Step 1 – Download My Preconfigured MQ2 Pack

I’ve bundled my working MQ2 setup for Sanctuary into a single zip so you don’t have to hunt plugins or build anything.

Download RetroRayTV’s Sanctuary MQ2 Pack:

  1. Click the download link.
  2. Save the zip file somewhere easy to find (like your Downloads folder).
  3. Wait for the download to fully complete.

Step 2 – Create a Folder Just for MQ2

We want MQ2 in its own folder, separate from your EverQuest client.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to your C: drive (or any drive you prefer).
  3. Create a new folder, for example:
C:\MacroQuestSanctuary

You can call it something else if you like, but keeping it short and simple is best.

Step 3 – Extract the MQ2 Pack

  1. Find the MQ2 zip file you downloaded (in Downloads or wherever you saved it).
  2. Right-click it and choose “Extract All…” (or use 7-Zip / WinRAR if you prefer).
  3. When it asks where to extract, choose:
C:\MacroQuestSanctuary
  1. Let it extract everything.

When it’s done, open C:\MacroQuestSanctuary and you should see things like:

  • The main MQ executable (for example: MacroQuest.exe)
  • EQBCS2.exe
  • A Macros folder
  • Plugin/config files already set up by me

At this point, MQ2 is installed – no extra configuration needed.

Step 4 – (Optional) Create Desktop Shortcuts

To make starting MQ2 easier you can create shortcuts.

MacroQuest shortcut

  1. In C:\MacroQuestSanctuary, find MacroQuest.exe.
  2. Right-click it, then drag it to your desktop.
  3. Release the mouse and choose “Create shortcut here.”

EQBCS2 shortcut

  1. In C:\MacroQuestSanctuary, find EQBCS2.exe.
  2. Right-click it, then drag it to your desktop.
  3. Release the mouse and choose “Create shortcut here.”

Now you have:

  • A MacroQuest shortcut
  • An EQBCS2 shortcut

on your desktop, so you don’t have to dig through folders every time.

Step 5 – Launch Order: MQ2 → EQBCS2 → Sanctuary

To make sure MQ2 attaches correctly to your EQ client, run things in this order:

1. Start MQ2

  • Double-click your MacroQuest shortcut on the desktop
or run MacroQuest.exe directly from C:\MacroQuestSanctuary.
  • You should see a new MQ icon appear in your Windows system tray (bottom-right, near the clock).

2. Start EQBCS2

  • Double-click your EQBCS2 shortcut
or run EQBCS2.exe directly from C:\MacroQuestSanctuary.
  • EQBCS2 will run in the background and be ready for any MQ2 features/macros that use it.

3. Start Sanctuary

  • Double-click your Sanctuary Patcher shortcut on the desktop.
  • Let it check for updates and launch the game.
  • At the login screen, use your EQEmu loginserver username and password.
  • Pick Sanctuary from the server list and log into your character.

If MQ2 is attached properly, when your character finishes loading you should see some MacroQuest-related text appear in one of your EQ chat windows.

That’s your sign that MQ2 is running and hooked.

Step 6 – How to Tell MQ2 Is Working

You don’t have to type any commands to know MQ2 is alive. Just check for:

1. System tray icon

  • Look at the bottom-right of your Windows taskbar.
  • You should see the MacroQuest icon there while the game is running.
  • (Depending on your setup, EQBCS2 may show a tray icon or a small window as well.)

2. MQ2 text in your EQ chat window

  • After you log into your character, watch your chat box.
  • You should see short initialization messages from MacroQuest when it connects to your client.

If both of those are true, your preconfigured MQ2 setup is running alongside Sanctuary.

Step 7 – Basic Troubleshooting

If something doesn’t look right, here are quick things to try:

You don’t see the MacroQuest icon

  • Make sure you actually ran MacroQuest.exe (or the shortcut) before starting the Sanctuary patcher.
  • If the icon still doesn’t appear, close everything, then:
    1. Start MacroQuest.exe
    2. Start EQBCS2.exe
    3. Start the Sanctuary Patcher and launch the game again

You see the icon, but no MQ2 text in EQ

  • Confirm you’re launching the same client you used in your New Player guide (the RoF2 install in C:\EQSanctuary or whatever path you chose).
  • Make sure the game fully loads your character into the world; MQ2 won’t attach at just the server select screen.

Game or MQ2 crash on startup

  • Double-check that the MQ2 zip fully extracted into C:\MacroQuestSanctuary and isn’t missing files.
  • Make sure your EverQuest client is still intact by running the Sanctuary patcher again to repair any damaged or missing game files.
  • Try avoiding installing EQ or MQ2 into C:\Program Files to prevent permission issues.

Step 8 – What Comes Next

At this point you should:

  • Have MQ2 installed in its own folder (like C:\MacroQuestSanctuary)
  • Be able to start MacroQuest.exe, then EQBCS2.exe, then start Sanctuary
  • See the MQ2 icon in your system tray
  • See MQ2 messages in your EQ chat window when you log in

This post is just setup.
In separate subposts, I’ll go over:

  • How I actually use this MQ2 setup on Sanctuary (attended only, no AFK), and
  • Recommended settings/macros for different classes and playstyles.
