If you just finished reading my “EverQuest Sanctuary: The Secret Custom EQ Server You Won’t Want to Log Out Of” post and thought, “Okay, I want in,” this is the guide that gets you from nothing installed to logged into Sanctuary.
In this post I’ll walk you through:
- Creating your EQEmulator and Loginserver accounts
- Installing the RoF2 EverQuest client into a clean, dedicated folder
- Joining the Sanctuary EQ Discord and grabbing the official patcher
- Launching the game and logging into the Sanctuary server
- Basic troubleshooting if something goes sideways
A separate post will cover MacroQuest 2 specifically for Sanctuary, so this one stays focused on just getting you in-game.
Step 1 – Create Your EQEmulator & Loginserver Accounts
Sanctuary uses the EQEmulator login server, which means you need two things:
- An EQEmulator forum account
- A Loginserver account attached to that forum account (this is what you log in with inside EverQuest)
1. Make an EQEmu forum account
- Go to the EQEmulator website in your browser.
- Click Register / Create Account.
- Fill out:
- Username (this is your forum name, not your in-game character name)
- Email address
- Password
- Verify your email if a confirmation link is sent.
Once that’s done, log in to EQEmu using this forum account.
2. Open the EQEmu Account Control Panel
- After logging into the EQEmu site, look for User Control Panel / Account Control Panel (usually in the top menu or under your username).
- Click it to open your account management page.
This is where you manage all your EQEmu-related stuff.
3. Create a Loginserver account
Now we create the credentials you’ll actually type into the EverQuest client.
- In the Control Panel, find the section labeled Loginserver Accounts.
- Click Create Loginserver Account / Add / New.
- Choose:
- Loginserver Username – this is what you’ll use on the EQ login screen
- Password – your in-game login password
- Save it.
You should now see your loginserver account listed on that page.
🔑 Remember the difference:
- Forum account → used to log in to the EQEmu website
- Loginserver account → used to log in inside the EverQuest client
4. Write this info down
Before we move on, write down:
- EQEmu forum username + password
- EQEmu loginserver username + password
We’ll be using the loginserver username/password at the actual EverQuest login screen.
Step 2 – Create a Dedicated Sanctuary Folder & Install the RoF2 Client
Now we’ll set up a clean EverQuest client specifically for Sanctuary.
1. Create a dedicated folder
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to your C: drive (or any drive you want to use).
- Create a new folder, for example:
C:\EQSanctuary
You can name it something else, but short and simple (no spaces/symbols) is best.
2. Download the RoF2 client
Use this direct link for the RoF2 client:
RoF2 Client Download:
https://flavortown-files.s3.ca-central-1.amazonaws.com/everquest_rof2.zip
- Click the link or paste it into your browser.
- Save
everquest_rof2.zipsomewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder. - Wait for the download to finish (it’s a big file, so let it complete fully).
3. Extract the RoF2 client into your Sanctuary folder
- Open your Downloads (or wherever you saved the file).
- Right-click
everquest_rof2.zip→ Extract All…- Or use 7-Zip / WinRAR if you prefer.
- When it asks where to extract, choose:
C:\EQSanctuary
- Let it extract everything.
When it’s done, open C:\EQSanctuary and you should see a full EQ client:
eqgame.exe- Lots of
.s3d/.eqgfiles - Folders like
Resources,uifiles, maybemaps, etc.
This is now your EverQuest Sanctuary client folder.
Step 3 – Join the Sanctuary Discord & Install the Patcher
Now we’ll connect that client to the actual Sanctuary server using their official patcher.
1. Join the Sanctuary EQ Discord
Use your invite link (replace with your real one):
Sanctuary EQ Discord:
- Open the link in your browser.
- Accept the invite and join the Discord server.
- Once inside, look for a channel named something like:
#files#downloads#patcher
or anything similar where they host the game files and patcher.
2. Download the Sanctuary patcher
Inside the Sanctuary Discord:
- Go to the channel where the patcher is posted (usually pinned or mentioned in the topic).
- Download the latest Sanctuary patcher file (most likely a
.zipor.rar). - Save it somewhere easy to find (again, Downloads works fine).
3. Extract the patcher into your Sanctuary folder
We want the patcher to live in the same folder as your RoF2 client.
- Locate the patcher
.zipyou just downloaded. - Right-click → Extract All…
- Set the extraction destination to:
C:\EQSanctuary
- Click Extract.
Open C:\EQSanctuary and confirm you now see the patcher executable in there, for example:
SanctuaryPatcher.exe
(or whatever the actual filename is from the Discord)
It should be sitting alongside eqgame.exe and the rest of the client files.
4. Create a desktop shortcut to the patcher
We’ll use the patcher to launch the game from now on.
- In
C:\EQSanctuary, find the patcher EXE. - Right-click and drag it to your desktop.
- Let go of the mouse and choose “Create shortcut here.”
You now have a Sanctuary Patcher shortcut on your desktop. This is what you’ll double-click any time you want to play—no need to touch eqgame.exe directly.
💡 The patcher usually handles all the
patchmestuff and client updates for you, so just always launch via this shortcut.
Step 4 – Launch the Game & Log In
Time to test everything.
- Double-click your Sanctuary Patcher shortcut on the desktop.
- Let the patcher:
- Check for updates
- Download any missing Sanctuary files
- Launch EverQuest when it’s done
- When the EverQuest login window appears, enter:
- Username: your EQEmu loginserver username
- Password: your EQEmu loginserver password
- Click Login.
- On the server select screen, choose Sanctuary.
- Create your first character and log into the world.
If you can get into the game and run around, your account + client + patcher are all working.
Step 5 – Basic In-Game First-Time Tips (Optional but Helpful)
A couple of quick tweaks for your first launch that are nice to set up right away:
1. Enable windowed mode (if you prefer it)
- Press Alt+Enter to toggle between full-screen and windowed mode.
- You can also go into Options → Display and adjust resolution to match your monitor.
2. Adjust your UI scale
- Press Alt+O to open Options.
- Go to the Display or UI tab.
- Adjust the UI scale so your hotbars and text aren’t tiny or massive.
3. Save your layout
Once you place your windows where you want them:
- If you’ve messed with viewports and want to reset, type:
/viewport reset - Save your layout for future characters with:
/save
(Some servers also support /loadskin style commands, but saving once is usually enough to avoid re-doing your UI every time.)
Step 6 – Quick Troubleshooting
If something doesn’t go as planned, here are some fast checks.
1. Game won’t launch / crashes immediately
- Make sure RoF2 fully extracted into
C:\EQSanctuary(no half-extracted or corrupt files). - Re-run the Sanctuary patcher so it can repair or re-download missing files.
- Avoid installing the client into
C:\Program Filesif you can; that can cause permission issues.
2. Can’t log in
- Double-check you’re using your EQEmu loginserver username/password, not your forum login.
- Log back into the EQEmu Account Control Panel in your browser and confirm your loginserver account is active and listed.
- Make sure there aren’t typos (passwords are case-sensitive).
3. Can’t see the Sanctuary server
- Confirm the patcher is launching the correct client (your RoF2 in
C:\EQSanctuary). - Check the Sanctuary Discord to confirm the server is up and that you’re on the right client version.
- If you’re using a VPN or strict firewall, try disabling it temporarily to see if it’s blocking the login server.
Step 7 – What’s Next?
If you followed all the steps above, you should now:
- Have an EQEmu forum + loginserver account
- Have the RoF2 client installed into a clean folder (
C:\EQSanctuaryor similar) - Have the Sanctuary patcher extracted into that folder
- Have a Sanctuary Patcher shortcut on your desktop
- Be able to log into Sanctuary, create a character, and start playing
